Pediatric emergency medicine and toxicology specialist at Children's Hospital Boston. Chair of the AAP Committee on Environmental Health (2004–2005) — the committee that produced the 2005 AAP lead exposure policy statement citing TLC to recommend against chelation for children with blood lead levels below 45 µg/dL. Also an ACCLPP voting member (2002–2005).
Not a TLC investigator. As chair of the AAP committee that issued the 2005 policy statement, Shannon oversaw the translation of TLC results into clinical guidance. The committee's recommendation against chelation for BLLs 20–44 µg/dL relied heavily on the 2001 TLC NEJM paper, without addressing the trial's design limitations.
